Episode 555

Episode 555 – Geeking With Karen Bee: Portals, Page-Turners & Swamp Things

In this episode, we (finally!) settle into our brand new studio setup and catch up on all the books, stories, and strange obsessions that have been filling our shelves—and our heads—lately. From the heartbreak and food memories of Crying in H Mart to the surreal mythology of The Spear Cuts Through Water, we share what’s moved us, confused us, or just totally swept us away. Expect lively discussion about The Midnight Library, The Book of Doors, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow—all rich with time travel, alternate realities, and unexpected doorways.

Things get chaotic with Dungeon Crawler Carl, philosophical with The Poppy War, and delightfully weird with Halls of the Turnip King. We also dip into the strange, mossy world of Swamp Thing—from Alan Moore’s iconic run to the creature’s (sometimes cursed) appearances in film.

Along the way, we touch on I Hope This Finds You Well and what it says about modern workplace culture, gush about using Storygraph, and shout out the haunting track Pinprick by Dome.

If you love books with bite, stories with portals, and a little comic book nostalgia, this one’s for you.

Hi, I am Sean "SeanGeek" McGinity. And I am a geek. For me, the definition of the word geek comes from liking something so much, that I deep dive into it. Not just consuming it... but becoming it. I "geek out". Everything started with comics. I read them and studied them with a fine eye, and then started making my own. Since then, I have "geeked out" on movies (Star Wars The Evil WIthin, Hurt), music writing, recording, and performing (The Classic Embers and Dome), writing (the Symka comic and the upcoming Intuitives novel), and now... this Podcast.

Hey guys, SeanGeek here. Just to be clear, this is me geeking out on Todd "FastFretFingers" McGinity here. Todd is the GOAT. My brother is an established musician, mastering the Fretboard with a blistering discipline. If there was a guitar style, tone, pitch... Todd would find a way to replicate it. From his early days mastering Van Halen and Rush, his musical palate has expanded with forays into classical and flamenco, hard rock, blues and pop. From live performances to learning the recording process, when it comes to music, he has done it all.
